EUGENE, Ore. -- If you love baseball and you like to read, you could score big this summer.

The Eugene Emeralds are in the middle of a book drive that could be your key to some free tickets while also promoting literacy for children.

If you have any gently used, kid-friendly books you want to get rid of, you can take them to the Ems ticket office through June 24. In exchange, you’ll get a ticket voucher for any July game, except the one on the fourth.

“Research shows that a lot of our kids are below reading levels that they need to be at,” General Manager Allan Benavides said. “And so what we are trying to do is just promote literacy in our community. We want kids to succeed at school and high school and college. And literacy is obviously a big part of that.”

The Ems are working with United Way and Connected Lane County to give the books to eight Lane County schools. They’re hoping to collect 200, and so far they’re at about 50.
