Eugene Emeralds host Fireworks Night

Last year, the team didn’t shoot off fireworks until 1 a.m. because the game lasted 20 innings.

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Emeralds hosted their annual Fireworks Night Tuesday and promised fans they would make sure the fireworks show started before 11 p.m., after last year’s debacle.

Last year, the team didn’t shoot off fireworks until 1 a.m. because the game lasted 20 innings.

KEZI spoke with Allan Benavides, the General Manager of the Ems. He said the show usually lasts 15 to 20 minutes, but last year they cut it down to five minutes because of how late they started it. Benavides said last year there was a rule in professional baseball that didn't allow them to stop the game for a fireworks show.

However, that rule isn't a problem this year, and leading up to the event they set on lighting them off right after the game or at a more reasonable time.

"Because of what happened last year and the late shoot, the city and our permit require us to shoot or commence the fireworks show before 11 p.m. tonight,” Benavides said before the game. “So, if there is something happening in the game, and we're tied up, we will have to pause the show and we will have to shoot it as quick as we can. So, it won't be the full show, it will be one big grand finale and then we're going to have to pick up the game immediately."

He said Tuesday night’s game would also be fun because the players would be wearing their special Monarcas jerseys. Benavides said the jersey is part of the team trying to commemorate the Fourth of July and to follow their initiative to embrace and celebrate the Latino community in Eugene, which is also part of a larger effort of the MiLB's “Copa de la Diversión" campaign.

The team planned to auction off the jerseys during Tuesday's game. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the Centro Latino Americano, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the empowerment of the Latino community in Lane County.
