EUGENE, Ore. -- Two organizations are working together to clean and inspect the area impacted by the Ferry Street Bridge fire.

Eugene Public Works, along with Northwest Hazmat, spent much of the day power washing the area and inspecting for structural damage under the bridge. At this time, officials have reported no damage to the bridge beyond cosmetic issues.

The city will bring in a third-party engineer team to further inspect the bridge this weekend just to make sure.

Brian Richardson, the public affairs manager for the City of Eugene, said he's thankful no one was killed in the fire, and that's largely due to the work of the authorities.

"I'm just very thankful for our first responders," Richardson said. "They can save lives, save property, and put out the fires as quickly as possible."

In addition to these two organizations, the Eugene Police department is working to help three displaced members of the homeless camp that was destroyed. They will be placed in a hotel for a few days, plus they will be connected with resources to help them get back on their feet and will receive a new tent.

The area where the fire occured will be shut down to visitors and campers for the "foreseeable future" according to Richardson. He also said the city will explore the possibility of permanent closing this section based upon that event. At this time no decision has been made.
