EUGENE, Ore. -- A 5-year-old Eugene boy is recovering in the hospital from severe facial and brain injuries after falling out of the second story window of his apartment on Wednesday morning.
"It's just been a really hard time, and he's not doing good right now. He's having a hard time breathing," neighbor Nicole Ball said.
Ball is a close friend to the mother of the boy that fell. She was in the apartment at the time of the incident. She said they were having a play date among all of their kids, and the children were alone upstairs.
"We were like, 'Go upstairs and play.' It's usually safe and fun," Ball said.
According to Ball, the boy pushed the screen out and then jumped, landing on the concrete below.
KEZI 9 News spoke with a man -- who asked to be anonymous -- who said he witnessed the incident.
"Protect your child. You don't have to coddle your child but just make sure your children are safe," the man said.
Eugene Police Department said the matter is still under investigation.
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Despite prior statements from Ball, a babysitter has come forward saying she was not involved in the incident. Ball has since taken back her claims.]
