EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene nonprofit Sponsors, Inc. is planning to build five tiny home duplexes for people with criminal histories near their headquarters on Highway 99.

According to the Department of Corrections, almost half of the people released from state custody are homeless once they get out. Sponsors' goal is to help people transition back into society after serving time.

Executive director Paul Solomon said the tiny homes are being designed to help people with disabilities, seniors and veterans with a criminal history.

"Our program has really been built around the idea that housing is one of the more fundamental basic needs that has to be met if we're going to be successful in transitioning people successfully in back into the community," Solomon said.

Sponsors, Inc. already has some different properties around Eugene for people with criminal histories, but this is the nonprofit's first time using tiny homes, a move Solomon said is cheaper. The project is being funded through private donations.

"Beyond that, we're looking for different types of housing that we can provide for people," Solomon said.

People in Sponsors' transitional housing program will be eligible to apply.

Each house will be just under 300 square feet and will cost around $300 a month, with some of the money going back to tenants after they leave.

Solomon said they are still raising money for the project but hope to open it next fall. To donate, click here.
