EUGENE, Ore. -- The city of Eugene is planning on raising the rates for parking throughout the city at the start of next month.

The proposed increase would go into effect on Feb. 1.

KEZI 9 News spoke with Jeff Petry the parking manager with the city. He said the increased rates will be happening throughout downtown to the University of Oregon campus.

He said the reasoning behind the proposed increases is to help fund improvements to the parking structures, like modernizing elevators, installing security cameras as well as adding more LED lighting for their users, among other things.

Petry said the increased rates could also open spaces for people willing to pay more and will hopefully influence drivers to use alternative forms of transportation.

“The average increase for monthly permits will (increase) $10 per parking garage or parking lot, the on-street meters are proposed to go $1.20 to $1.35 an hour, and the off-street hourly rate is proposed to go $1 to $1.20 an hour," Petry said.

Petry said the city is still looking for feedback from residents on the proposed changes. You have until Jan. 18 to send the city an email to voice your opinion.
