EUGENE, Ore. -- From Hayward Field to new apartment complexes, construction in Oregon is booming, and Eugene isn't missing out.
Gale Krumenar with the Oregon Employment Department told KEZI 9 News that construction is the fastest growing job sector in the state.
In Eugene, Riley Wessel with Stedman Sheet Metal said he's been working nonstop on many different projects, including a new dentist's office on Cresent Avenue.
"There is a lot of construction over at U of O," Wessel said. "There is student housing and Hayward going on right now, and then lots of little stuff like this, so it's a lot of hopping back and forth a lot."
Since the start of 2019, public records from the City of Eugene show the city has approved 68 new building permits. Twelve of them for apartments that have a total of 84 units.
The city approved 337 new building permits in 2018 and 455 in 2017. While the city approved fewer permits in 2018 compared to 2017, the total value of the combined projects went up from $131,673,157 to $163,484,389
One new project that developers hope to do in the future is a new apartment complex on Goodpasture Loop. The Seattle developer has submitted plans that call for 14 new buildings that will hold 117 apartments.
One person who lives next door to the proposed development said she's worried the new complex could lower her property value. However, Holly Shillington who also lives nearby said she's excited to see construction booming in Eugene.
"Eugene is a thriving young city, and I really like seeing the new growth here," Shillington said.
