EUGENE, Ore. -- In the midst of the current social media climate, KEZI is digging deeper into social media etiquette.

KEZI spoke with Anne Marie Levis, the president of Funk/Levis & Associates in Eugene.

She said her firm provides services across the marketing, design and communication landscapes, especially when it comes to social media.

Levis said social media is a great forum to connect with others and to provide information.

But Levis said it can also be harmful, so you need to be mindful about what you post.

"Who's my audience for this post? Has someone else read it before it goes out? Has it been spell checked? Are you upset or emotional at the time you're writing it? If so, don't post,” Levis said. “And really think about if this is an appropriate thing to put out onto social media."

She said she is a big believer in free speech but wants people to understand that whatever you post will potentially have negative consequences or reactions.

Levis said if you do run into some backlash because of something you posted, there are steps you can take to hopefully mitigate the situation.

“After you’ve posted, if you made a mistake, be transparent, apologize and stick to that apology,” Levis said.
