EUGENE, Ore. -- Students from the University of Oregon and local high schools walked out of class Friday to push for meaningful climate action.

Students walked out of South Eugene High School at noon, where they met up with the college students and marched to the Federal Courthouse.

However, more than just students participated in the demonstration today. Community members of all ages met at the courthouse to make their opinion heard.

Marco Elliot said that while his generation may be partially to blame in what he now believes is a climate crisis, he is standing with the students in solidarity.

"I'm delighted to see young people all over the world moving in a direction where they're putting pressures on adults that have not taken responsibility for what is happening to the planet," Elliot said.

Members of South Eugene High School's Earth Guardians 350 club were in attendance, and they said that real change has to begin with the younger generation.

"The entire world isn't something that one person can change. But together, when we get together, we are one big organism that is going to change the world," student Hunter Calvert said.

Students from all over the world are protesting climate change, demanding politicians hear their voices. People in over 100 countries scheduled protests for Friday, and there were 1,659 climate strike events planned worldwide.

It all began with a teenager named Greta Thunberg, who skipped school to protest outside the Swedish Parliament last summer, launching a global youth climate movement.
