EUGENE, Ore. -- Sixteen-year-old Carson Lydon is raising money for a cause that hits home for him by using his love for baseball.

Lydon, who will be a junior at Churchill High School this fall, lost a childhood friend to suicide in February 2017. He said he struggled with the loss and fell into a depression himself. However, he was able to find healing by creating his own nonprofit organization, A World Free of Suicide.

The organization aims to eliminate the stigma around suicide and raise money for mental health awareness organizations in the Eugene area. Since founding the organization in 2017, Lydon has raised about $25,000.

On Aug. 11, his nonprofit will be partnering with the Eugene Emeralds to host a suicide prevention night. The purpose of the event is to educate others about suicide prevention. All the proceeds from ticket sales will go to local mental health awareness groups.

A World Free of Suicide has also held fundraising walks and charity nights at high school sporting events.

Lydon said it’s important to fundraise for causes like suicide prevention because youth are making themselves heard now more than ever.

"The younger you are and the harder you work with whatever you're working on, you're going to go out stronger than an old dude,” said Lydon.

After his time in high school, Lydon hopes to continue his baseball career while growing his organization. He said he wants to do right by his friend and the people who deserve it.

"I just think it's important because it's showing that I can still still try to strive and be the best I can be in baseball as well as try to be the best person I can be off the field,” said Lydon.
