EUGENE, Ore. -- A Eugene woman accused of hitting and killing an elderly pedestrian in November 2018 pleaded guilty to the crime on Friday.

Jamie Christopher struck and killed Bill Schmidt, 75, while she was driving a 2006 Jeep Wrangler the evening of Nov. 16, 2018. Christopher had previously pleaded not guilty to second degree manslaughter, DUII and reckless driving.

In exchange for a guilty plea, Christopher was given a lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide and DUII. The reckless driving charge was dropped.

Jon Weiner, an attorney representing Christopher, said the state has been more lenient because the woman lacks a serious criminal history.

"Many people that we deal with are life-long criminals," Weiner said. "This isn't her. This is a really bad uncharacteristic event that happened. We're grateful that the state took that into account."

Christopher is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 29. Weiner expects her to spend about two years behind bars.

The crash occurred at River Road and Kourt Drive.
