EUGENE, Ore -- A Eugene eye doctor will be inducted into the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame.

Dr. Howard Fine is no stranger to recognition. In 1999, Fine was chosen as one of the 25 most influential ophthalmologists of the 20th century by a vote of 16,000 ophthalmologists worldwide. For this new honor, more than 30,000 physicians selected Fine for his distinguished career and contributions.

"Most things we do are based on work of others previously. We sort of improve on them in incremental steps. Some of the research I've done has led to innovations that have been internationally utilized," Fine said.

Fine's research has led to new instruments and implants and has innovated many surgical procedures including cortical cleaving hydrodissection.

Fine says he's honored to receive this recognition.

"It's sort of a culmination of all of the things I've done during my career. My career was a terrific blend of patient care, clinical research and teaching and the teaching involved worldwide travel so it was a wonderful experience," Fine said.

The induction ceremony for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Ophthalmology Hall of Fame is Saturday, April 14, in Washington, D.C. Fine say 20 members of his family will attend.
