EUGENE, Ore. – A high-speed rail expert said the Amtrak train derailment should have never happened and there were many ways it could have been prevented.

Brad Perkins, CEO of Cascadia High-Speed Rail, said he was very sad to hear about the derailment Monday morning.

Investigators said the train was going 80 miles per hour before it entered a curved 30 miles per hour zone.

Perkins said there should have never been a curved speed limit zone for a high-speed rail.

"We do not have curves, or anything close to this level in our design,” said Perkins. “The key is safety for us, and then speed. We do not design a corridor in this day and age for that degree of curvature."

He said another issue is that a high-speed train cannot be on a dated old freight rail system.

Despite Monday’s derailment Perkins still believes that traveling by train is the safest form of transportation. He said there are more than 40,000 car related deaths in the U.S. last year, with 500 of those being in Oregon.
