Oregon vs. Oregon State rivalry game still unnamed ahead of Saturday matchup

Last year they decided to no longer call it "The Civil War." Both universities decided to drop the name, saying it was a long-time coming and should have happened sooner.

EUGENE, Ore. -- It's been more than a year since officials at Oregon and Oregon State decided to change the name of their annual matchup, but a new name has yet to make a touchdown.

In 2020, both universities agreed to no longer call the rivalry game the Civil War, saying it was a long time coming and should have happened sooner. However, no updates have come from either side since the call was made in June 2020.

Ahead of the game on Saturday, the universities' athletic departments issued a joint statement about where things stand: "The Oregon-Oregon State series continues to be a great rivalry, and we look forward to Saturday's game. We have no updates regarding any new names for the series at this time."

A local sports talk show host, Steve Tannen, said fans are taking matters into their own hands.

"Somebody said they should call it the World's Largest Outdoor Craft Beer Party; another one was the Cascadia Cup. So to be perfectly honest, I'm looking forward to the new name. But I haven't heard one that I think that's it, that's the one we should go with," Tannen said.

Graduate student Ian Winbrock is among the community members who say the name drop is a good thing.

"I think we should look critically into that history and really pay our respects, not to why we have a new name or no name now, but really look a little bit more critically into why we chose the name in the first place," Winbrock said.

But some students are not ready to part with the old name. They said they're still referring to it despite the name being officially dropped.

"When it got changed, everyone was kind of upset honestly; me and all my friends still call it the Civil War," said University of Oregon student Hunter Johnson.

New name or not, all the focus will be on the field on Saturday.
