COTTAGE GROVE, ORE -- The bond between and father and daughter can be a special one.
“He’s been here since day one," Raquel Ivie said.
The bond Jim Ivie and his daughter Raquel have keeps her on track.
“I got her into racing go-Karts when she was 16," Jim said. "From then on we’ve been racing all year-round.”
Jim is a former race car driver. He knew Raquel also had the need for speed at an early age.
“From the time she was little I used to push her around a little Barbie car and she used to drive like she was on a dirt track," Jim said. "I thought she’s got talent driving a race car.”
As a kid Raquel would go with Jim to the track to watch his races
“I remember sitting in the stands with family and watching," Raquel said. "It was fun.”
Now Raquel is in the driver seat. Jim is her crew chief and coach.
“Everything is at his shop," Raquel said. "We park everything there, work on everything there. We kind of got all this started together.”
Jim says the father-daughter bond translate out on the track.
"We try to make a good car and make the car work really well," Jim said. "When she does awesome and when she wins a race or leads a race it feels great.”
Together they have witnessed the highs and lows of the racing life, including an accident in 2009 that left Raquel’s racing career in doubt.
“I flipped off the turn one and two and fractured a vertebra, had a concussion, destroyed my car," Raquel said. "We didn’t think I was ever going to drive again."
With her dad’s support Raquel was back on the track just a month after the crash. A few years later Raquel won her first championship with her dad by her side.
“The excitement that I got racing it absolutely compares just watching her race," Jim said.
Raquel hopes to compete at the Knoxville Nationals in Iowa. It’s considered the premiere title in sprint car racing. One thing is for sure, Raquel won’t do it alone.
“It would mean a lot to show my dad that all the hard work went into all of this was worth it," Raquel said. "To take it to those big races, it would make all of this more worth it than I can imagine.”
