ELMIRA, Ore. -- Ballots for director position three at Fern Ridge School District are being cast during Lane County's Special Election this May, and comments made by candidate Ed Litten are being scrutinized.
Under a Facebook post, Litten wrote: "If a woman wants to use her womb for a *** dumpster, that's her business, she should have the right to pick her own hanger."
A person under that comment said: "Ed don't you have a daughter yet you're saying this?"
"I'm raising my daughter to have more respect for herself then to let a man *** in her if she don't want a baby," Litten said in response, "She will not use abortion as birth control."
Hundreds of comments were written in response to his statements.
"I was talking about a subject that I'm very passionate about. And the wording probably could've been used differently," Litten said.
At this time, the nature of the original post is unknown, but Litten said he doesn't believe he was wrong in sharing his view.
"At no time [did] I attack anybody. I just stated my opinion and how I feel about raising my kids," he said, "and that should be an individual right."
He also mentioned being controversial to get people thinking about different view points. According to him, this exchange was prior to his campaign, and since then he's taken a more subdued approach to social media.
One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, chimed in on the comment.
"He is known in the community for being an outspoken and controversial figure," they said.
Ballots for the special election are due on May 18.
