DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Service has been restored after a large fire on Highway 99 in the Green District Wednesday night caused the loss of landline telephone service to some parts of Myrtle Creek, Tri-City and Riddle.

The fire, which was found to be a stack of railroad ties, was reported on Wednesday at 11:37 p.m. to 911 dispatchers.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the fire damaged a fiber optic communications box and the damage affected Verizon Wireless customers south of Green.

As crews worked to repair the damage, some people were unable to dial 911.

In the event of an emergency, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says people should attempt to call 911 from any telephone or cellular service available. But if still unable to get assistance, find the nearest location with service or go to a fire or police department.

Crews expected to have the repairs completed by 10 a.m. Thursday.
