EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene Springfield Fire responded to reports of a brush fire near Valley River Center early this morning.

When crews arrived, they found a small island burning in the middle of the Willamette River visible from the VRC pedestrian bridge.

Crews used the water rescue boat with a small pump to access and extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Officials say the island may have residual smoke throughout the day due to smoldering roots, but there is no threat to the area.

Crews will periodically check the site throughout the day.
