WINSTON, Ore. -- Douglas Forest Protective Association has a warning for drivers after seeing many speed by a fire with their phones out Tuesday evening.

Fire crews responded to reports of two fires around 7 p.m. on Interstate 5 near milepost 114, just a few miles southeast of Winston. Officials said strong winds helped the two fires come together and spread to about five acres.

Crews were able to successfully put out the fire but they were concerned after seeing multiple drivers speed by and some drivers were seen with their cell phones out, presumably recording the fire as they passed by. Fire official said these actions can put other drivers and first responders at risk during an already dangerous situation.

DFPA wants to remind drivers that when passing through fire incidents to slow down, move over and focus on the road.

Firefighters remained on scene for about three hours mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.

A preliminary investigation shows that the cause of the fire was vehicle related.
