SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Eugene Springfield Fire received a call about a "vehicle fire" on 52nd St. and High Banks Rd. in Springfield just after 5 a.m. on Saturday morning, April 14.

Fire officials said the fire actually turned out to be a motorhome fire, which they actually need very different resources for.

Initially, only one engine was sent, but fire officials said they immediately called for backup and changed procedures accordingly after seeing it was a motorhome. If the fire had been reported correctly, the correct resources could have been there sooner.

Fire officials said motorhomes are more challenging for a number of reasons. One is simply because they're bigger and provide more places where people could be, making getting everyone out safely a little bit different. They also said they often find the locations of motorhomes are more difficult because they might be close to a building or possibly in storage.

"There's a whole host of other tactical considerations because of the size, and the different fuels, and power distribution centers and that sort of thing that we don't encounter with your typical automobile," said Eugene Springfield Fire Battalion Chief, Scott Bishop.

Bishop emphasized that accurate reporting is so important to resolve an emergency situation as soon as possible.

The owner of the motorhome said he had been living in it and was inside at the time of the fire. He said he was able to get out in time, and nobody was hurt, but he's left without a home for now.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
