DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. – It’s been six months since the Archie Creek Fire swept over Highway 138 in Douglas County, but fire victims said cleanup is taking longer than they’d hope.

KEZI 9 News spoke with a couple who lost everything in the fire last September. They wanted to remain anonymous, but they said they were frustrated by the delays caused by the federal, state and county governments.

“It’s slow, it’s really slow,” they said. “There’s a lot of aspects to this that we didn’t really know about.”

Glide Revitalization is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to helping fire survivors get back on their feet. Executive director Alison Doty said they are focused on clean-up and rebuilding efforts right now.

She said the delays are mainly being caused by lost paperwork and miscommunication between agencies.

"There were several properties that their information got dropped or lost somewhere,” said Doty.

Doty said some survivors have started cleaning up and rebuilding themselves. However, she said it likely cost them a lot of money out-of-pocket, since they won’t be using the money set aside by federal, state or county government to pay for it.

“It’s their property,” said Doty. “They want to get moving. And this area is not known for sitting around waiting for something to happen.”

Right now, Doty said there is no timeline as to when cleanup will be complete.

Until the cleanup is complete, the couple said they’re going to stay positive.

“It is still beautiful,” they said. “There’s still peace up there and it feels very peaceful and beautiful.”
