FALL CREEK, Ore. -- One family's backyard is under water after the spillgates were opened at the Fall Creek dam.
John Baumann has lived in the Fall Creek area for half a century and he told KEZI 9 News he has never had to deal with the destruction he's facing right now.
"I have not had a problem on this property after they built this dam until this year, and it's completely preventable," Baumann said.
Baumann said the Army Corps of Engineers could have been better prepared.
"They could have dumped more during the snowstorm and left enough capacity to account for more rain," Baumann said.
But Erik Petersen with the Corps says they did what they needed to do in order to protect the most amount of people.
"All in all I think the system performed really well as it's intended to, and I think as a consequence of managing it as we have, we have been able to take the peaks off the flows and manage downstream flooding," Petersen said.
Officials said the Fall Creek floodgate will be open until at least Monday.
