"We're hoping folks will be safe this weekend, make sure their fires are dead, cold, out," said Edward Hiatt.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Forest officials want to remind campers to be careful with campfires this Memorial Day weekend.

Crews said they've already had a few small fires this year. One was a campfire that was unattended and started to grow outside of its ring, another was a car that caught fire near a forest. Both were stopped before they got big.

With the fire danger potential going above average later this summer, they're asking everyone to be cautious.

"We're hoping folks will be safe this weekend, make sure their fires are dead, cold, out. We know there will be a lot of folks out camping in the forest," said said Edward Hiatt, Interagency Fire Staff Officer for the Willamette and Siuslaw National Forests and Northwest Oregon District BLM. "Use them, have fun, be safe around their fires, but when they're done, make sure they're extinguished."

According to Keep Oregon Green, you should drown the coals with water, stir with a shovel and then drown again until it is completely extinguished. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave.
