Free women's self-defense class being offered

The recent crimes around Eugene could have women looking to learn the best ways to defend themselves, and this free class for women could help them do just that.

EUGENE, OR. -- A Eugene business is offering women the tools they need to make sure they're safe.

McKenzie Martial Arts in Eugene offers a women's self-defense class every weekend.

But next Saturday, they will be offering their free women's class to anyone looking to better prepare themselves.

After hearing about that attempted purse-snatching that happened on Thursday, owner Adam Roberts said he thinks the class couldn't come at a better time.

He said he's glad she was able to fight him off, but that's not always the best choice.

"In a situation like that, if someone tried to grab your belongings, and you started kicking and slapping and they run away, you can say hey, it worked that time. It might not have been the best choice, but maybe it was the best choice for that instance."

And if things do escalate, they will teach you how to stand your ground.

"The other one is if it's not just possessions, they might want your body -- they want to remove you. So then we have certain drills of how do we hold our ground? How to base. If someone's trying to remove you, you need to have techniques to where you feel like you're 500 pounds. You're not going to be able to move you."

That free class will be held at McKenzie Martial Arts next Saturday, April 14 at ten in the morning.

After the class, they will be holding a seminar about self-defense at the Eugene Downtown Athletic Club at noon.
