Harrisburg, Ore. – Harrisburg high school’s senior quarterback Dax Bennett isn’t your typical quarterback.
Bennett also plays on the other side of the ball, starting as a safety for the Eagles on defense."It's just a different, different switch I tend to turn on on defense,” said Bennett.” “You know, having that motor always going and always hitting someone or finding work to do on defense and just bringing all I got really."
Not only does Bennett prefer to play defense and hit players, but it’s also helped him improve his quarterback skills, learning how to read coverages.“I guess just reading him. Seeing what he does like off the snap,” Bennett said. “If he's going to back petal or you know come up for a run or play action. Just watching what he does and then responding off of that."
During practice, he’s often the only player to take snaps at quarterback forcing his coaches to take some precautions on his playing time and style. Bennett said, “it's not that easy honestly, I don't know why, but I just like hitting guys so like I remember one game this year coach told me to go down or go out of bounds and I told him I can't do that, so I just kept running over guys."
He says he gets his competitive edge and aggression to play defense from his background in wrestling. "The physical and mental toughness that wrestlers bring to football is a little different I think,” Bennett said. “I think we're a little different in a good way, quicker, wrapping up, hitting harder I guess. I don't know just being more athletic I guess."
Bennett has been wrestling since he was in kindergarten, but says his true calling in on the gridiron, playing for and with his team. “You know I just kind of got to take and accept you know, what I am who I am playing the role of quarterback and just um doing my best for the team and just uh trying to win games for them," said Bennett.
So far this season his play has elevated the Eagles to a 6-2 record, compared to their 5-6 record from last year.
