SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Governor Kate Brown is proposing a big funding boost for Oregon State Police that could put more troopers on the road.

Trooper numbers have stayed flat in Oregon as the population has boomed.

SPECIAL REPORT: Where are the troopers?

Lt. Vonn Schleicher of OSP said right now Oregon is the state with second lowest per capita rate of troopers around the country. He would like to see OSP have 15 troopers per 100,000 Oregonians, nearly doubling their current amount.

"This would allow us to come back to a 24-hour patrol schedule," Schleicher said. "To have troopers available to respond to calls whenever they occur, regardless of the date and the time. "

The Oregon House and Senate will have to approve the bump in funding before it becomes a reality.

OSP gets their funding from the state's general fund.
