EUGENE, Ore.-- The grand opening of the new Civic Park has been postponed because of the coronavirus.
Kidsports said the construction of phase one will be complete at the end of April on schedule. However, the grand opening is delayed indefinitely until it is safe for the community to gather in crowded places again.
Executive Director Bev Smith said when that day comes, it will be a celebration of being able to reconnect and be outside again.
"Once we get to the other side, we really need to have a celebration," Smith said. "This community cares for each other and right now is playing for each other by staying home."
Smith said they have raised $25 million for phase one, which includes the Kidsports building, turf field, and supporting facilities. The last $5 million will be covered with construction loans because the organization has retracted fundraising efforts during the economic crisis.
Smith said she cannot wait for the community to experience what has been in the works for five years.
"We’re going to be ready to open this park when it’s safe to do so, so we can have a great celebration and have a place and space for people to come, heal, get healthy and enjoy recreating once again," Smith said.
