SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Crews have contained a grass fire in the Gateway area, but traffic was still being affected on Interstate 5 Wednesday night.

At about 3:15 p.m. drivers called in grass fires at the northbound Interstate 5 ramp onto Beltline and Gateway.

Smoke could be seen billowing in the area, and officials said spot fires were following the wind south.

"Noticing the flame movement with the wind, we came back and brought some crews here to the Best Buy parking lot. There were a lot of embers and areas where it was spotty, so our concern was embers getting on top of the roofs of those commercial structures and creating a lot more fire loss than just some grass," said Battalion Chief Mike Caven.

The fire did not spread to any businesses, though some reported smoke inside their buildings.

As of 5:30 p.m., firefighters were monitoring and mopping up hot spots.

Officials said the I-5 northbound exit ramp onto Beltline and Gateway could be closed for several hours. Earlier in the afternoon, traffic was backed up on Beltline and northbound I-5.
