ROSEBURG, Ore. - On Thursday, November 16, a student found a threat of gun violence written on a bathroom stall.

The threat read, "I'm bringing a gun to school on Monday, 11-20-17. Watch your backs. I'm fed up."

The school and authorities were made aware of the threat when it was found. The superintendent said they conducted a thorough investigation and found the threat not to be credible. However, parents weren't notified until the morning of Monday, November 20.
Community members were shaken up when they saw the threat. They said that in light of some events that have taken place in Douglas County, they take gun violence very seriously. Many parents kept their kids home from school, and many were upset that they weren't told about the threat sooner.

Superintendent Gerry Washburn said since the threat wasn't credible, they didn't feel it was necessary to inform parents. They only did once the image of the threat had caused a commotion on social media.

Their statement said that after investigation the threat was deemed not to be credible, but if parents wanted to keep their children home for the day the absence would be excused.

”We wouldn’t be having school if we thought that it was a credible threat. We take that very seriously, we’re not going to needlessly jeopardize students," said Washburn.

One mother felt this was an opportunity to look at mental health. Monica Mason St. Suave said she felt the district handled the situation as best as they could. She felt the blame didn't need to be pointed there, but at the children causing these problems. She said that better access to the help and attention they need could prevent these incidents...and it starts at home.

”We wouldn’t be having school if we thought that it was a credible threat. We take that very seriously, we’re not going to needlessly jeopardize students," said St. Suave.
