SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Habitat for Humanity of Central Lane has broken ground on its largest project to date.

Fischer Village on R Street in Springfield will be the site of 12 new single-family homes.

Habitat for Humanity of Central Lane Executive Director Kellie Devore said four families have already been selected, and each family will need to put in 300 to 500 volunteer hours to purchase their homes.

Habitat for Humanity of Central Lane purchased the land in 2015, and Devore said they hope to have the project completed by 2022.

"There is a tremendous need for affordable housing in this community and really 'round the state," Devore said. "It's difficult to find places to rent that are affordable, let alone purchase."

Since 1990 the organization has built 72 homes. Their 73rd is set to be completed next month in Eugene.
