HARRISBURG, Ore. -- Harrisburg's Jimmy Holland still remembers the day of his accident.

"My car broke down," Holland said. "When I was standing in the trunk apparently a drunk driver came going sixty and just crushed me and pinned me between my car and his car and apparently ripped off my leg in the accident."

After several surgeries Holland was bedridden for months. The multisport student-athlete from Harrisburg High School had to come to terms with the harsh reality that life was never going to be the same.

Football, baseball and wrestling were no longer a possibility. Holland said everything from tying his shoes to showering was a struggle.

“My friends feel bad because they don’t invite me to things because they know I can’t do it," Holland said.

That's when Holland found the Eugene Cornhole League. Founded in March 2019, the league is comprised of a group of local athletes who gather to play cornhole tournaments once a week. Holland felt right at home after his first match earlier this year.

"They say they’re shocked how well I can do it," Holland said.

In just a few months Holland has earned top-five finishes in the weekly tournaments.

League commissioner Jacob Sands says Holland is an inspiration to the other players.

"It just shows that anybody can do it if they set their minds to something no matter what disability they have,” Sands said.

For now, Holland is happy with being one of the guys.

But don't be surprised if he becomes a household name in the sport.

"A goal would be to definitely be in those big tournaments," Holland said. "That would definitely be fun.”
