EUGENE, Ore. -- A Eugene man who crashed into two teenagers on the side of the road east of Harrisburg Wednesday night had a blood alcohol content twice the legal limit, and one of the teens suffered life-threatening injuries, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jared Wayne Jones, 24, faces charges of second and fourth-degree assault, reckless driving, reckless endangering and driving under the influence of intoxicants. His blood alcohol content was 0.158, the sheriff’s office said.

The car a 16-year-old was driving -- a black 2003 Toyota Corolla -- broke down on Diamond Hill Drive near the intersection of Weatherford Road. He parked on the side of the road and the car was partially in the westbound lane. Deputies said it was dark and rainy.

Friends arrived in a Ford F150 pickup to assist the teen with jumping his vehicle. He and his 17-year-old friend, both from Harrisburg, were standing at the back of the Toyota when they were struck by Jones, who was driving a 1997 Geo Prizm.

Jones said he was headed west on Diamond Hill Drive at about 60 mph when he hit the teens at about 5:46 pm.

The 16-year-old had life-threatening injuries and was taken to Riverbend Hospital.

A family member said he lost his left leg and suffered multiple fractures. He is in the intensive care unit at Riverbend awaiting surgeries. The teen is a student at Harrisburg High School.

The 17-year-old had minor injuries and went to the hospital for evaluation. Two other juveniles in the pickup reported minor pain.
Jones was taken to Riverbend Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Harrisburg and Junction City fire departments, Junction City Police Department and medics from Eugene and Springfield assisted deputies.

The Multi-Agency Crash Investigation Team members from the Lebanon Police Department, Oregon State Police and Albany Police Department also responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the teenager and his family. You can help by following this link.
