EUGENE, Ore. – In 2014, KEZI introduced you to a 12 year-old boy battling a life threatening heart condition, who was eventually able to overcome it through a heart transplant. Four years later, he is now calling for a new law that will designate the second week of April as, "Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Appreciation Week."

Jarod Doerner now 16, told KEZI on Sunday he is feeling better than ever. Jarod said since October 2017, he has been working with state representatives to make the new law as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

Here is a little background on how far Jarod’s come.

Back in 2014, Jarod was diagnosed with a condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy, which enlarged his heart making it beat at a rate of 250 beats per minute, which could have eventually caused it to burst. Luckily, he was able to successfully receive a heart transplant thanks to the services from Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in California.

Since the procedure Jarod has been getting better every day, and is thankful for all the organ donors out there.

“In order to give me and the other people that got their organs to help them survive,” said Jarod. “So whoever that person was, I know I can't thank them, but I can thank their family, so thank you."

On April 10th, Jarod and his family will head up to Salem to meet with Oregon Gov. Kate Brown who will sign the bill. On that day she will also recognize and give a "Gift of Life Award" to selected organ donors and their families for their sacrifices.
