EUGENE, Ore. – A man accused of leading officers on a high-speed chase Wednesday morning has been arrested.
Springfield police said an officer was monitoring traffic at about 10 a.m. near a day care center when he saw a car speed by at 86 mph. The officer chased after the car, going from 49th and Main streets in Springfield to Highway 126.
The driver reportedly refused to stop when the officer turned his lights on, and speeds hit up to 94 mph before the officer ended his pursuit, last seeing the vehicle head west on Beltline.
Shortly after, 911 calls started coming in from Eugene residents reporting someone driving recklessly, and a detective caught the driver’s tail at 8th Avenue and Chambers Street, police said.
With the danger the driver presented to the public, authorities decided to force the vehicle to stop. Police said the driver got out and ran away but was quickly taken into custody.
Authorities said intoxication was apparent in the case, and a driving under the influence investigation was initiated.
The suspect has been identified as Marco Antonio RamirezLopez, 28, of Eugene. He faces charges of eluding by vehicle and by foot, reckless driving and DUII.
