UPDATE: One lane open after fatal crash, fuel spill on Highway 38

UPDATE: Charles Stephens, 59, of Eugene was driving his truck when he hit a cow on the roadway near Scottsburg.

Stephens lost control and hit a power pole. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Oregon State Police said the truck was carrying 7,500 gallons of gasoline and 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel. It's not certain how much leaked, but hazmat crews are on scene assessing the leak.

UPDATE: Highway 38 is open to a single lane of traffic following a fatal crash and fuel spill near Scottsburg Monday night.

All lanes had been closed overnight due to the crash. One lane is now open at Burchard Creek near milepost 21.

Officials said flaggers will be providing traffic control and to expect brief delays.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Highway 38 is shut down in Douglas County following a fatal crash and a fuel spill near Scottsburg.

The crash at milepost 21 on Highway 38 involved a commercial motor vehicle carrying 7,500 gallons of gasoline and 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel. An unknown amount of the fuel leaked onto the highway. 

Some residents in the area are still without power.

The crash happened at 9:45 p.m. Monday, when the driver of a 2012 Kenworth truck towing double fuel tanks struck a cow on the roadway. The driver lost control of the vehicle, went off of the road and struck a power pole. 

The driver suffered fatal injuries in the crash and died at the scene. 

Hazmat crews are on scene assessing the leak.

Oregon State Police is also on the scene along with Scottsburg Fire and Rescue, Elkton Fire and Rescue, Reedsport Fire and Rescue, Roseburg Hazmat, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Lower Umpqua Ambulance, Douglas Electric Cooperative, and ODOT.
