VENETA, Ore. – A resident in rural Lane County scared off a burglar with a gun on Tuesday, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies arrived to the 84000 block of Territorial Highway just before 3 a.m.

Residents told deputies an unknown man had broken into their house and entered their bedroom when one of the residents armed himself with a handgun and chased the man out of the house.

However, in an interesting turn of events, the burglar reportedly returned to the home a short time later while the resident was on the phone with 911 but was scared off.

Deputies said the investigation revealed the homeowner had discharged his firearm as a warning shot as the burglar advanced on him.

The suspect reportedly left in a silver-colored sedan. Jason Lackey, 37, was arrested on Highway 126 near Lakeside Drive after deputies located the vehicle.

Lackey faces charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, first and second-degree burglary, first-degree attempted theft, being a felon in possession of a firearm and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.
