ROSEBURG, OR. -- A man's horse collided with a vehicle in Roseburg on Wednesday after being startled.

Roseburg Police say Jason Kingsbury was napping under this bridge and had his horse tied up by its’ saddle.

But the horse got spooked, ran out from under the bridge, and up into oncoming traffic.

Kingsbury said he believes it was a flock of geese taking flight that startled the horse, Wilbur, near the Oak Avenue bridge.

Patricia Attaway and her sister Margaret Thompson were driving back to Thompson's home to celebrate her birthday, when they suddenly saw a horse in front of them.

“We’re just coming up on the bridge and all of a sudden there was just something coming," said Attaway. "And it was like, oh my gosh, that cannot be a horse. And there was no time to stop or get out of its way.”

Thompson said she's sure the saddle dragging behind the horse didn't help matters, either.

“For a split second, I think she got stopped, and then the horse nailed us. But, he was towing a saddle on the ground behind him, so.. and I’m sure every time that popped up he thought something was after him.”

The women said they think the horse tried to steer itself away from them, but just couldn't do so in time.

They said Kingsbury ran over and immediately checked to see if they were okay, then tended to his horse.

Attaway said right now, her only concern is how Wilbur is doing.

“I made sure -- wanted him to call me last night to make sure the horse was okay, because I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I did not know. And he said no broken bones, as far as they can tell, no broken bones, and thought she would make a full recovery.”

Kingsbury said Wilbur should be back to full health in about six months.

Attaway's car was totaled, but said she'd rather replace that than see a man lose his companion.
