NOTI, Ore. – A man accused of assaulting an elderly family member barricaded himself inside a home near Noti Sunday night, authorities said.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said they learned of the assault at about 11 p.m. It happened in the 22000 block of Fisk Road.
Shawn Stilwell, 44, reportedly significantly injured a 73-year-old man in the face. The victim got out of the house, but his wife who is in hospice was still in the home with Stilwell, deputies said.
The investigation indicated that Stilwell was agitated, possibly intoxicated and had access to weapons, authorities said. Deputies found the man’s vehicle parked in a long driveway, blocking other vehicles from passing. They called out to Stilwell using their patrol vehicles but got no response.
An armored rescue vehicle was called for due to the situation, and deputies used it to move Stilwell’s vehicle to get access to the home. Deputies again called out to Stilwell through a PA system. Upon getting closer, deputies saw the victim’s wife who appeared uninjured, and Stilwell was seen pacing as they tried to talk him out of the home, they said.
Shortly after 7 a.m. Stilwell came to the front porch with his hands up and was taken into custody. Authorities said he was taken to the Lane County Jail and charged with second-degree assault, menacing and strangulation.
