NEAR MCKENZIE BRIDGE, Ore. -- Crews battling the Terwilliger Fire have been getting asked how the community can help. They said there are a few things you can do, and most of that involves your home.
Firefighters said they greatly appreciate the support and generosity of the community during the fire. They love seeing "thank you" posters, but said they don't need any donations.
Nick Michael is a Public Information Officer with the Terwilliger Fire. He said have all the gear and food they need.
Michael said the best way to help is to become part of the firefighting effort, by creating a defensible space around your home.
"Part of that is doing clean up around your properties...cleaning out gutters, prepping your house in case a fire does come toward that house sometime in the future," said Michael. "It may not be this year, may not be next year, but to work with us to improve your property so we have a better chance of saving it if and when that time comes."
Michael said another way to help is to always being prepared to leave at a moments notice, in case your neighborhood has to be evacuated.
