UPDATE: The eastbound lanes on the highway are now reopen.

PORTLAND, Ore.-- The Oregon Department of Transportation shutdown Interstate 84 between milepost 17 and 62 Friday night.

ODOT said the weather conditions have made the freeway near the Colombia Gorge too dangerous for drivers. The agency said they will open up the freeway when it's safe to do so.

ODOT said this in a statement.

"Snow, ice and cold temperatures are expected in much of the Willamette Valley and ODOT is encouraging drivers to stay off the roads. Our crews everywhere are working to keep the roads as safe and clear as possible and can work faster if there are fewer vehicles on the road. If you must travel this weekend expect delays, watch the forecast, plan ahead, carry chains and know how to use them."
