EUGENE, Ore. -- The interim fire chief for the Eugene Springfield Fire Department is talking about the dangers of urban wildfires.

Chief Chris Heppel spoke to the League of Women Voters at the Valley River Inn on Thursday.

He said the Dowens Fire in Cottage Grove last week is a reminder of how dangerous wildfires can be, especially in warm and dry conditions. It took firefighters three days to contain it, and it burned 75 acres.

Chief Heppel said there are ways to make wildfires easier to fight, and it all starts with creating a defensible space around your home. He said to take a look around your property for storm damage as well because downed trees can be an easy fuel source.
