COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- Larry Sullivan, a longtime administrator in the South Lane School District, stepped down as superintendent on Monday night.

In an interview, Sullivan said he is battling a serious health condition and is no longer able to work.

"I love the district," Sullivan said. "The only reason I'm resigning is because of my health."

Sullivan came out of retirement to lead the district. He was originally given the title of interim superintendent and had planned to stay for only one year.

According to the district website, Sullivan was superintendent of the Lane Education Service District from 2012 to 2017. Before that, he worked for the Eugene School District as director of educational support services from 2004 to 2012.
