Despite losing a big senior class, Elmira is ready to replenish their ranks with fresh legs and a smaller upperclassmen group ready to lay a foundation for the future.

Veneta, Ore. -- Practice feels a lot different at Elmira high school. Despite some forboding signs of the looming pandemic on the horizon, all seems somewhat normal at Don Schmidt Field.

"It's definitely [different],"says senior quarterback Ian Drago. "No masks, we don't have to wear masks [under helmets] which is nice. And then just being able to fully practice and have the weight room back. It's been nice."

It's a bit of a rebuild for Elmira football but with a somewhat normal football season on the horizon...interest in the Falcons within the school has ticked back up.

"We lost seven seniors," head coach Justin Peeler explains. "Five of them were definitely key guys for us. And we thought we were only gonna bring in 3 or 4 freshmen and we brought in 7 or 8."

With a line led by Troy Anderson and Ian Drago under center, Elmira does have some strengths at key positions.

"I think mostly in the running backs is mostly where we're strong at," Drago says. "We got pretty good running backs and working on the line. But we should have a pretty good team this year."

With so few seniors on the team, the gratitude for a normal fall season is felt a bit more. Especially given what they saw last years' seniors get.

"Last year for all of our seniors it was definitely hard on them. This year we have very little seniors on the football team this year. So for us it's nice for us to have a full season."

"I think these guys realize that yeah we have this opportunity to be kind of normal and they're really pushing the kids to like this is our chance to have normalcy," Peeler finishes. "Let's work hard, let's do what we can and let's have as successful a season as we can."

So the Falcons will see what their leadership and the new legs on the team are worth in week one when one of the best teams in the southern half of the state, the Hidden Valley Mustangs, come to town.
