ALBANY, Ore. -- As part of Linn-Benton Community College's culinary program, students get the chance to cook in a professional kitchen.
The two-year program allows 30 students to cook dishes they never thought they could make.
"When I first got here as a first year, I was in the bakery program," second-year student Isaiah Weeks said. "Before that, the only thing cooking was out of a box. Just last week, I made a mere glaze over a pear au jamais. It had cake and mousse and compote in it, it was amazing. I never thought I'd ever make anything close to that before this."
In their first year, students receive guidance from chef instructors, and in their second year begin making courses, building menus and running the on-campus restaurant.
"Coming here was an eye-opener," second-year student Tirrah Garofallou said. "We have these great chefs, these great resources. I mean, we get to work in a line and be a part of a real restaurant, get to be a part of a real kitchen and feed a mass of people."
The students leave the program with a food handlers card, Oregon liquor license, and an Associate of Science degree.
