EUGENE, Ore. -- A new grant has Lane Transit District moving in the right direction to meet its goal of 25 electric buses by 2025.

The U.S. Department of Transportation just gave the agency $3.9 million. Along with money from LTD, that should be enough to buy five electric buses at $1 million each. That’s on top of another 11 electric buses already on order.

The replacement vehicles will improve safety, air quality and reliability for residents in the Eugene-Springfield metropolitan area.

Currently, LTD has about 100 total buses that operate on a mix of diesel.
