EUGENE, Ore. – A company has come forward to take the blame for the fuel spill in Amazon Creek in Eugene.

The owner of Lane Apex, Sam Miller, said one of their trucks was at a property south of Bailey Hill Road and 18th Avenue on Monday, when a storm grate that had flipped up ripped the fuel tank in the truck.

Miller said 20 to 25 gallons of fuel were released and the driver noticed what happened while driving off.

He said most of the spill was on the property and they thought they cleaned in all up. But after it rained, some of the fuel seeped into the creek.

When Miller heard about the spill in the creek, he called the city of Eugene and the Department of Environmental Quality to report that he believed it came from a Lane Apex truck.

Brian Richardson with Eugene Public Works said Lane Apex responded appropriately to what happened.

Richardson said crews are still trying to skim fuel off the surface of the water, and they will continue to monitor the booms in the creek to see if they are collecting fuel.
