EUGENE, Ore. – Lane Community College will require students and employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in the fall. The Board of Education voted in favor of the requirement during a meeting Wednesday evening.
Prior to the vote, the college conducted research, surveys, discussions, town halls, and analysis and determined requiring the vaccine was the best option. According to a memo, close to 72% of students already are vaccinated or plan to get vaccinated. For employees, the number jumped above 90%.
“Our primary goal is to create a campus environment where both students and employees feel safe enough to come back to school and work. We have heard a consistent and clear message from our employee groups that they will feel safe coming back to our campus if we require vaccinations,” staff said.
The University of Oregon and Oregon State University already announced vaccine requirements, and LCC said many of their students have dual-credits at both campuses, so it makes sense to also require vaccines at the community college.
School officials plans to start an awareness campaign to let students and faculty know about the requirement soon.
