EUGENE, Ore. – Lane County is looking to fill a hole in Eugene’s affordable housing gap by using a small piece of the Lane County Fairgrounds.

On Monday, the Lane County Fair Board met to discuss a proposal to use .74 acres of the 55-acre fairgrounds near the intersection of West 13th Avenue and Tyler Street for housing.

If approved, an application would be submitted to the State of Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) which would provide capital, rent assistance and other supportive services.

The county identified the spot as one of a handful of options to build more affordable housing, particularly for women and children.

Some fair board members expressed concerns that giving up a small portion of land could be a slippery slope, so they're asking for some assurances.

“They also are asking to have some guarantees from the Board of Commissioners that they will continue to invest in and use this other 55 acres of this fairgrounds site,” said Devon Ashbridge, a spokesperson for Lane County.

At the meeting, some said the land would be a good fit, especially because it was used for low-income housing in the past.

The Lane County Board of Commissioners will explore the proposal further on Tuesday and is expected to vote on the proposal next week.
