EUGENE, Ore. – Lane County now has 24 positive coronavirus cases, Lane County Public Health said Friday.

One previous case assigned to the county has since been found to be a Douglas County patient, they said.

The newest cases announced Friday include:

  • A 16-year-old boy from a private residence in the Eugene-Springfield area who is currently at home. The case is believed to be household transmission.
  • An 18-year-old man from a private residence in the Eugene-Springfield area who is at home. The case is believed to be household transmission.
  • A man in his 70s from a private residence in the Eugene-Springfield area who is at home. The case is believed to be travel related.
  • A woman in her 60s from a private residence in the Eugene-Springfield area who is at home. The case is believed to be travel related.

Dr. Patrick Luedtke said this is a prime example of why all age groups should be cautious, not just those in a high-risk group.

"We don't know enough about this virus to know what percentage of adolescents will get severe disease. It could be that one of these adolescents will end up with severe disease. Even if they don't get severe disease where they have to go to the hospital or even be admitted to the hospital, you can still get life-changing disease," Luedtke said.

Luedtke said all age groups are at risk of getting infected.

"These two infections show certainly younger people can get infected and other countries have shown that a small percentage of young people can have severe disease. We don't know enough about this virus to predict who those people might be so precaution is really the order of the day," Luedke said.

At least 784 tests have been conducted.

Jason Davis with Lane County Public Health said data shows that we are getting more tests processed from Lane County.

Davis told KEZI 9 News that we are on par in terms of the number of tests given our population and even above the average in some counties in Oregon and Washington State.

So far, there has been one coronavirus-related death in the county.
