EUGENE, Ore. – The Lane County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Thursday on the Holiday Farm Fire.

Officials are urging the public to ignore rumors claiming you can access places that are being affected by the fire. It’s for your own safety as well as the firefighters on the highway.

The National Guard is coming in Thursday Night to set up access points.

When fire conditions allow, Sheriff Cliff Harrold said welfare checks will begin. If people have reported someone missing but have since made contact with that individual, they are asked to call the non-emergency number at 541-682-3977.

Harrold said the community needs to understand this is going to be a significant event for a period of time. He said he understands it’s emotional.

Regarding looting, there have been no reports of widespread issues.

At this time, there is no information on fatalities, but it’s a very real possibility there will be.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal said the estimated containment date is Oct. 29. Containment means they’re confident the fire won’t move anywhere else. The estimate is very rough, and there’s a chance the fire could be burning well into the rainy season.
